PTF M15A ANALOG TAPE RECORDER
New
Two reels. One machine.
- Quarter-Inch Tape: Four stocks at 76, 38 or 19 cm/s, with CCIR or NAB equalisation, each taken from the machine's own figures.
- The Whole Machine: The deck, the amplifier drawer and the service panel, each in a window of its own, stuck together or apart.
- Weight, Glue and Grit: Three controls for the character over a calibrated machine, and a clean limiter at the very end.
- 23 Factory Presets: From the calibrated machine to a worn deck, and any number saved as files.
- Mac and Windows: AU, VST3 and a standalone app on macOS, universal for Intel and Apple Silicon. VST3 and a standalone app on Windows, 64-bit.
Insert it on a mix bus, a drum bus or a single track. Set the level on the VU meters, choose the tape and the speed, then add weight, glue and grit until the machine sits in the mix.
From the reels to the service panel
PTF M15A follows a quarter-inch studio recorder of the 1970s through its whole signal path. The record amplifier with its bias and treble trimmer, the tape and its hysteresis, the heads and the head bump, the replay amplifier, wow and flutter, hiss, dropouts and hum. The VU meters read the level on the tape, 0 VU at -18 dBFS, and the tape runs up to speed and slows to a stop with the pitch sliding, as the machine does.

Three windows, one machine
The deck, the amplifier drawer and the service panel each stand in a window of their own. Stuck together they move as one machine; pulled apart, each goes where the session has room for it. Every window sizes on its own, and a right-click on any panel closes it, brings it back or stacks the three as the machine stands. The DAW session keeps where they stand and how wide each one is.

Weight, glue and grit
WEIGHT pushes the low end into the tape first, raises the head bump and adds an octave below the lows. GLUE is a stereo-linked compressor ahead of the tape that softens the transients and lifts the quiet parts. GRIT brings the roughness of a working machine: Modulation noise, scrape flutter and hiss. All three at 0 is the calibrated machine, measured against its specifications.
