Every repeat goes back round the tape.

  • Three Heads, Twelve Modes: One record head and three playback heads on a loop of tape. The mode selector switches them singly and in combination, with or without the spring tank, and blends between neighbouring modes with SHIFT held.
  • A Loop That Runs Away: INTENSITY sends the heads back into the record amplifier with the tone stack inside the loop, so every pass is shaped again, until high settings run into self-oscillation.
  • A Measured Spring Tank: Two springs fitted to a measured recording of a real tank, fed from the same point as the record head, so the springs hear the repeats as well as the dry signal.
  • Three Captures of the Input Stage: Neural captures of the machine's own instrument input at volume 5, 7.5 and 10, with MIC, FROM P.A. and INSTRUMENT as three different ways onto the tape.
  • The Extension Unit: A 24-socket patch bay, tape condition, wow and flutter, motor torque, tempo sync with dotted and triplet divisions, stereo, modulation, freeze, reverse and 41 factory settings.

A loop of tape, three heads and a tank of springs.

PTF-Cosmic Echo models each part of the echo loop from the machine's own service notes. The record head writes the input onto a loop of tape, three playback heads read it back, and INTENSITY feeds them into the record amplifier again. REPEAT RATE sets the capstan between 12 and 40 cm per second, and a change of speed bends the pitch already on the tape, as on the machine.

Two units. One machine.

The echo unit carries the three volume knobs, the twelve-position mode selector, repeat rate, intensity, the tone stack, echo and reverb level, the VU meter, the jack strip and POWER. Below it sits an extension unit the original never had, with a patch bay, fourteen tape and motion controls and thirteen switches along its bottom strip. Every knob, switch, jack and plate is rendered from a 3D model built from photographs of real units, with the wear of a played instrument: Scuffed covering, knocks at the corners and dulled chrome.

Two units. One machine.

Tape, fresh or ten thousand times round

CONDITION takes the loop from fresh tape to one that has been round ten thousand times, duller, noisier and less steady. W / F sets how far the speed wanders, TORQUE how well the capstan holds it against a transient, NOISE the hiss and dropouts off the oxide, and SPLICE the one join in the loop, passing the heads once a revolution. DRIVE sets how hard the record amplifier pushes the tape into saturation, and the FILTERS switch puts LOW CUT and HIGH CUT on the output or inside the loop, cutting again on every pass.

Every stage on a patch bay

The patch bay brings out every signal stage of the tape path on its own socket: Twelve outputs on the top row and twelve inputs below. A cord dragged from one socket to another repatches the machine, a double-click on a cord pulls it out, and a double-click on the bare plate restores the factory patch. The LFO and SPD sockets let the modulator drive the capstan, from a gentle vibrato to a broken machine.

From a single slap to outer space.

41 factory settings in seven groups: The Machine, Vocals, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Dub and Space, and Studio. From a single fast slap on a vocal to dub throws locked to the host tempo, frozen loops, reverse tape and a worn machine with its hum and hiss.
